Write captions and configure metadata fields

1. Use Metadata to write the facts that travel with a photograph. Have local files, verified names/event details, and your recipient's requirements ready. Metadata writes can change originals or sidecars; use copies while learning.

Caption one photograph

1. Select one image and open Metadata or Edit Metadata. Confirm the filename and selected count.
2. Write or review Caption/Description, Headline, Creator, Credit/Source, Copyright, Keywords, and relevant location fields. Check identities, dates, and every factual claim.
3. Click the image preview when you need a larger photograph while keeping the caption area available. Use the separate full-screen view for detailed inspection.
4. Open the optional Special Instructions area when needed. Educational workflows may label the compatible feedback field Professor Comments; do not confuse it with the caption.
5. Save the metadata. Wait for the saved result or error, then navigate away and reopen the image's metadata to check the values.

Apply shared values to a batch

Select only the images that should receive the same information. Load a template and review its fields and target count before applying. Event/location/credit may be shared; a specific action caption often is not. Check one or more saved files from the batch, especially with mixed RAW/JPEG sources. Do not treat a hidden field as an instruction to clear it.

Configure the Info sidebar

1. Open Settings → Metadata. Search the supported Info fields.
2. Use Included in Info, Left off Info, or Required fields to inspect the configuration. Check/uncheck a field to change its visibility. Filename remains visible.
3. Choose the required-field profile appropriate to the task. Required fields can be hidden without disabling validation. A built-in profile is a preparation aid, not a promise of a recipient's current acceptance rules.
4. Inspect loaded-file status for missing or invalid values. Wait for metadata loading before assuming an empty value is final.
5. Use Manage templates & custom requirements for reusable templates and custom requirements. Restore default fields resets visibility, not file metadata.

Saved data, verification, and problems

Visibility preferences remain on the device and follow the app's theme. Metadata uses existing IPTC/XMP/ExifTool paths; sidecar behavior depends on format and settings. Keep .xmp files beside their originals. If saving fails, retain your draft, check write permissions and source availability, and report the exact error. Supported undo can also fail on file writes; verify readback. Camera information such as focus, shutter, and anti-flicker describes available recorded data, not an inferred complete camera history.
