Rename a shoot with a saved naming convention

Batch Rename changes source filenames; export naming changes newly created copies. Decide which you need before starting. Use a disposable set while designing a convention, and keep existing source backups. File renaming is not a universal-undo operation.

Rename selected files

  1. Select the intended local files. Open Batch Rename / Rename Finder Items through the available file action.
  2. Choose Replace Text to substitute part of an existing name, Add Text to add text, or Format for a structured naming pattern.
  3. For an event convention, choose Sports or News where offered. Fill the explicit job fields, shoot/game date, photographer initials, and numbering choices.
  4. Review the example names carefully. Confirm the date rather than assuming today's date is the date the photos were taken. Check starting sequence and number width.
  5. Save the complete convention as a named preset when you need it for future assignments. Reload that preset and confirm its values before the next use.
  6. Run the rename and inspect the reported result. Check the actual files in Finder and IBP, including companion files when present.

Choose copy naming instead

If you only need delivery names, leave originals alone and use naming inside Export. Ordered set export can add seq001_ prefixes for sequence sorting. Card ingest can also rename destination copies when Copy ingest and Rename files are selected. These workflows have different targets even when the name pattern looks similar.

Saved data and verification

A preset retains naming choices, not a backup of the original directory. Source filename changes can affect external references or workflows that expect camera filenames. Check captions/metadata after renaming and ensure your normal backup still identifies the originals. Do not rename an extension to convert a file format.

If there is an error

Read collision, invalid-name, or permission messages before retrying. Inspect which files changed and which did not; a partial result is not an instruction to repeat the same operation on the entire batch.
